    Clicking an app, opening a photo or typing a letter all create instructions for your computer. The processor, also called the central processing unit or CPU, carries out those instructions and keeps the work moving in the right order.

    It Turns Commands into Actions

    Software breaks a job into small steps. The CPU reads each instruction and works out what it means. It then performs the required calculation or decision. This cycle repeats billions of times while the computer is running.

    When you edit a document, the processor handles your keystrokes, helps the app respond and coordinates when information should be saved or shown.

    It Moves Information Around

    The CPU does not work alone. It requests active data from memory, sends graphics work to the graphics processor and asks storage to load or save files. The motherboard provides the connections that let these parts communicate.

    A quick processor can still feel slow if the computer has too little memory, slow storage or software that is overloaded. Overall speed comes from the parts working together.

    Different Jobs Create Different Loads

    Reading a webpage usually needs short bursts of processing. Video editing, large spreadsheets and modern games may keep several parts of a processor busy for longer. Background updates and security scans also use processing time.

    Operating systems share the available work between open programs. This is why a computer can play music while you write an email, even though both tasks need the CPU.

    A Name Does Not Tell the Whole Story

    Processor family, age, core design, clock speed, power limits and cooling all affect performance. A higher number in one family should not be treated as a direct comparison with every other family.

    For everyday use, think of the processor as the computer's general coordinator. It follows instructions quickly, but the result still depends on memory, storage, graphics, cooling and the software you run.
