The back of an iPhone can act like an extra control without adding a physical button. Back Tap responds to a double or triple tap and performs an action you choose.
Choose the Two Gestures
Go to Settings, Accessibility, Touch, then Back Tap. Open Double Tap or Triple Tap and select an action from the list.
You might assign a screenshot to one gesture and an accessibility tool to the other. Back Tap can also run an action you have already created in the Shortcuts app.
Start with a Low-Risk Action
Test the feature with something easy to recognise and undo. A screenshot or Control Centre action makes it obvious whether the tap was detected.
- Hold the phone as you normally would.
- Tap the back two or three times at a steady pace.
- Repeat the test while the phone is in its usual case.
- Check that ordinary handling does not trigger it by accident.
Match the Gesture to the Job
Use Double Tap for an action you want quickly. Triple Tap takes more effort, which may suit something you do not want to activate accidentally.
Think about frequency as well. An action used several times a day earns the shortcut more than a feature opened once a month.
Change or Remove It
Return to the Back Tap menu whenever the choice stops being helpful. Select another action, or choose None under Double Tap or Triple Tap to disable that gesture.
A useful Back Tap setup should work reliably with the way you carry and hold the phone. Keep the gesture that saves effort and remove one that creates false taps.
