  • A 10-Minute Digital Declutter Routine
  • 16 August 2026 by

Ten minutes is enough to make one untidy part of a computer or phone feel more manageable. The goal is not to clean the whole device. It is to finish one small job without making rushed decisions.

Minutes 1 to 2: Choose One Area

Pick a single place that is causing trouble. On a computer, this could be the desktop, Downloads folder or one project folder. On a phone, try screenshots, downloaded attachments or one photo album.

Do not move to a second area until the first one is finished. A narrow target makes it easier to see real progress.

Minutes 3 to 7: Use Four Decisions

    • Keep: Leave current items where they are easy to reach.
    • Archive: Move finished work or older photos into a clearly labelled folder or album.
    • Review: Hold anything you do not recognise until you can check it.
    • Delete: Remove obvious rubbish, such as failed screenshots or downloads you no longer need.

An archive is not a backup. Important files still need another recoverable copy in case the device, account or storage fails.

Minutes 8 to 9: Check Possible Duplicates

Open both files or photos and compare their contents before deleting either one. A modified date may offer a clue, but it does not prove that two items are identical.

When a document matters for business, tax or personal records, keep both copies until you are certain which one is needed.

    Minute 10: Finish Safely

Review the Recycle Bin, Trash or Recently Deleted area before you clear it. This final check gives you a chance to recover an item moved by mistake.

Repeat the routine on a different area next month. Several focused ten-minute sessions will create better results than one rushed clean-up.
